Josh Akin is an award-winning filmmaker residing in Los Angeles, CA.
Having just completed his MFA in Film & TV Production at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, he is currently co-directing a feature reimagining of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and producing/editing BLACK SILK, a coming-of-age crime drama starring GET OUT's Marcus Henderson.
Recently, Josh directed the 2022 LA Shorts official selection JURASSIC PUNK, for which he earned the USC Jack Nicholson Directing Award. In addition to writing and directing, he is a seasoned editor, having cut the CineSol Best Short Film-winning YO SOY SALLY, LA LOCA, the BAFTA Student Award Shortlist-honoree DRIVEN, the Caucus Foundation TV Award-recipient SIDE EFFECTS, and CLARINS X FEED, a short documentary produced by Keely Shaye & Pierce Brosnan.
Originally from rural Georgia, Josh received a BFA in Drama from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. As an actor, he had the honor of starring in an NYU production of HAMLET and shared the Stonestreet Studios Outstanding Film Actor award with Miles Teller. As a precursor to directing JURASSIC PUNK, he has played guitar in rock bands since he was thirteen.
Josh is the founder of Animal Brain Productions and a creative partner at Peace Love Dope Films, a diverse filmmaking collective spotlighting underrepresented voices.
